The company earned its legendary reputation during World War II when the United States Marine Corps officially adopted the Ka-Bar USMC Fighting/Utility Knife — a blade that has since been carried by Marines, soldiers, and sailors in every major American conflict from the Pacific Theater to Afghanistan.
The Ka-Bar name itself was born from a fur trapper's letter to the company. After his rifle jammed during a bear attack, the trapper used his Union Cutlery knife to kill the animal. His handwritten testimonial was partially illegible — only the letters "ka bar" could be read, believed to be fragments of "kill a bear." The company trademarked the name in 1924, and it has been synonymous with toughness ever since.
